Last Chance: NYC Exhibition by Ryan Frank (Issue Five) Closes Saturday

Ryan Frank’s solo exhibition (Issue Five: “Found Objects, Handmade Frames”) at the Invisible Dog Art Center will close this Saturday, April 13th.

“I invite you to come see the show this weekend while you still can!

I am pleased to announce there will be a closing party this Saturday from 6-9pm during which I will debut a new performance piece These Specific Points, in collaboration with choreographer Katie Rose McLaughlin.

These Specific Points came out of curiosity about the interactive elements of the exhibition and the physical movement that is required on behalf of the viewer. This led me to ask a choreographer to create a movement piece that explores the spatial concepts in the exhibition, using myself and a dancer as its sole performers. The piece is approximately 10 minutes in duration and will be performed at the closing reception this Saturday at 7pm and again at 8:30.”

“I moved upstate and bought a car. After taking the same drive in my weekly commute I started to look forward to specific points in my journey, where I would sigh and delight in the combination of natural and man made beauty at the most scenic spots along the road. One day, while crossing the road in front of my house upstate, the symmetry of the yellow and white lines and absence of cars gave me the impulse to take photographs — one to the left and one to the right. My camera lens functioned as a way to check both ways before crossing. The photos accurately captured the scene that had been in front of me so many times before through my windshield, and I now had it documented so it could be displayed on my computer monitor. But seeing it on a flat screen or even in printed form just didn’t do the image justice. I needed to make a container in order to view it properly, something that recreated what I had seen and experienced in a three dimensional form.”
